Narcan Distribution Day: September 21,2023

On September 21st, 2023, in recognition of National Opioid and Substance Awareness Day, there will be Narcan training and distribution in Glens Falls and Warrensburg. For this event, Warren County Health Services is partnering with the Adirondack Health Institute, Alliance for Positive Health, and the Hope & Healing Recovery Community and Outreach Center.

Training and distribution will take place from 9:30 AM to 1:30 PM at Community Action located at 190 Maple Street in Glens Fall, and from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM at the Cumberland Farms located at 3805 Main Street in Warrensburg. This opioid antidote will be distributed free of charge!

Narcan is a medication used to reverse opioid overdoses… But Naloxone, which is sold under the name Narcan, is a safe medication that can save someone’s life by reversing the effects of an opioid overdose. Naloxone only works on opioids such as heroin, prescription pain medication, and fentanyl. These distribution sites will be staffed by community organizations trained in Narcan administration. The training will include recognizing an overdose, Naloxone administration, and what to expect after naloxone is given. There will also be harm reduction information provided with Narcan kits.

This event is open to anyone in need of Narcan kits or harm reduction information. Individuals who are struggling with opioid addiction, or who have a loved one who is struggling with this addiction, are encouraged to attend to receive a free Narcan rescue kit and training for its use.

Warren County Director of Health Services, Ginelle Jones, understands the need for this resource: “We continue to see the devastating impact that opioids have on our community… Increased availability of Narcan, and offering training to those who would like to learn how to use it, can save lives and give those struggling with opioid addiction a chance to seek treatment to overcome their addiction,” she said.

New York State’s Good Samaritan Law allows people to call 911 without fear of arrest if they are having a drug overdose that requires emergency medical care, or if they witness someone overdosing.

The Adirondack Health Institute has installed Narcan rescue kits around Warren County that are available free to the public 24/7. There are 37 emergency box locations within a twenty mile radius of Glens Falls. These Narcan emergency boxes are filled with four doses of Narcan, and are intended for emergency use during a suspected overdose.

Adirondack Region Cat Adoption Center’s Featured Cat of the Week: Ivy

Five-year-old Ivy, rescued from an overcrowded home, was used to being just another face in the crowd. It took her a little while to adjust to receiving one-on-one attention. She can still be a little cautious at first introductions but will quickly relax with a good petting session. When comfortable, Ivy is so full of love, giving it with her whole heart, and eager to share that love with everyone.

If you are interested in learning more about Ivy, please contact the Adoption Center at 518.409.8105 ext 101 or adoptadk@animalleague.org. You can also complete the adoption application using the link: www.animalleague.org/adkpreapproval

Glens Falls Boys Soccer 2-0 Over Mechanicville

On Saturday, September 16th, Glens Falls and Mechanicville met in a key test for both teams at Mechanicville High School. Following a scoreless first half of play, Glens Falls was the first team to score on a Tim Motsiff penalty kick (PK) after Landon Becker was taken down in the box.

Gavin Rittenhouse got the insurance goal to give Glens Falls the win! Mechanicville had their own penalty kick attempt late in the match, but Glens Falls keeper, Ayden Grieve, had yet one more PK save to keep the clean sheet. Grieve has three PK saves on three attempts this year.

Glens Falls now stands at 6-0 overall, and holds first place (4-0) in the Foothills Council.

Glens Falls will face Hudson Falls on the turf under the lights on Tuesday September 19th, at 7:00 PM.

Community Day at Fort William Henry

The Fort William Henry Hotel, located at 48 Canada Street in Lake George, would like to invite friends, family and neighbors to a Community Day on Sunday, September 17th, from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM at the Carriage House! This event will feature a BBQ, music by DJ Suzie Q and Fran, games for kids, and tours of the property. Tickets are $40 for adults, $15 for kids 4 to 10 years old, and free for 3 and under; and they include free admission to the Fort William Henry Museum.

A Community Day follows a long-standing tradition at the hotel: “It started as a clambake when I was a kid,” said Fort William Henry Corp. CEO, Kathy Flacke Muncil. “Our goal was to give everyone a chance to relax after a long summer. I want everyone to feel the joy I did as a kid, running around the property on a beautiful September day.”

Proceeds from the event will go to co-sponsor Women in Need (WIN), a nonprofit that serves families in Lake George. WIN helps women and families living in Warren, Washington, Saratoga and Essex Counties who need food, clothing, medical services, home fuel, transportation and shelter.

The BBQ will include chicken, sausage and peppers, hamburgers, hot dogs, 12 clams per adult – an extra dozen clams available for an additional $12 – and desserts donated by Lake George Baking Company. Deadline for ticket purchase is Friday, Sept. 15. Tickets are available either at fortwilliamhenry.com, or by contacting Nancy Nichols of Lake George Region Women for WIN, Inc. at (518) 668-2665.

Ticket holders are invited to tour the Carriage House and the newly renovated rooms. Parking for the event is free!

About WIN:

Lake George Region for WIN, Inc., a 501 (c) (3) non-profit corporation, was founded to help women and families living in Warren, Washington, Saratoga and Essex Counties through financial grants of $300 to $500. WIN identified women and families in need through recommendations from individuals, churches, schools, and government agencies.

WIN does not receive government funding. Its services depend entirely on fundraisers and individual donations.

About Fort William Henry Hotel:

The first hotel on the property opened in June 1855, and was eventually expanded to accommodate 900 guests. A veranda facing the lake was supported by 30-foot tall Corinthian columns. The original hotel burned in 1909, and another building was erected in 1911… In the 1950s, a 64-room motor inn was built.

The Fort William Henry Corporation was founded in 1952 by a group of entrepreneurs from Lake George and the Capital Region, including Robert F. Flacke, Sr. The corporation commissioned a replica of the fortress built by the British in 1755 during the French and Indian War era two centuries earlier.

In 1969, the older portion of the hotel was demolished. The kitchen and dining room – known as The White Lion Room – remained. A 35-room annex and indoor pool were added in 1984, and the 10,500-square-foot conference center was built in from 1999 to 2000. The five-story Grand Hotel opened in July 2004.

The Carriage House, built for housing horses and carriages, was renovated in 2022 and 2023 to provide a venue for weddings and events. The four-season venue can accommodate table seating for 400 people, and theater seating for 750. It also has a kitchen on site. The rooms in the motor inn wing were renovated during the winter of 2022-2023, alongside renovation work at the Carriage House.
