Veterans Business Network of the ARCC hosting 4th Annual Walk for Veteran Suicide Awareness & Prevention

The Veterans Business Network of the Adirondack Regional Chamber of Commerce (ARCC) is once again planning a walk for Veteran suicide awareness and prevention.

The 4th annual walk will take place, rain or shine, on Thursday, September 12th starting at 3:30 p.m. in Glens Falls City Park. After brief remarks, a 22-minute walk will commence to recognize the approximately 22 Veterans that are lost to suicide every day.

“As we prepare for this walk, just remember that what we perceive in others is just the surface. Unless they share their feelings, we don’t really know their true emotional wellbeing,” said Veterans Business Network Chair Sean Dion, also President at Mr. Electric of Queensbury.

“Within the ranks of our Veterans and First Responders, we owe it to them to be their sixth sense, to be there before a crisis; and get them to proper care.

Please come and support not only Veteran suicide awareness, but the vast resource network that took time from their day to do the same. We have grown each year due to your continued support of our mission!”

The Veterans Business Network (VBN), of the ARCC, was established in 2021 to create a safe space for Veteran business owners, and Veterans in the workforce, to connect, collaborate, and share resources. Regular meetings were held, and annual food & necessities drives to benefit organizations helping Veterans were planned, but the annual walk had its own story.

In 2021, the VBN partnered with the VFW Post 2475 to organize what was then known as the “Stop 22 Walk.” Stop 22 was an initiative, started in 2018, between the Department of NY Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and one of the nation’s leading health and well-being companies HUMANA, to increase awareness of Veterans committing suicide; 22 Veterans are lost each day.

“As a veteran, I know firsthand that one life lost to suicide is too many. Events like the ARCC Veteran Suicide Awareness & Prevention Walk are crucial in raising awareness and fostering open conversations about mental health. Together, we can identify those in need and ensure they receive the care necessary to heal and thrive before it’s too late,” said Christopher Thomas, MPA, RBLP-T & founder of Elite 9 Talent Solutions.

In addition to raising awareness, the event will raise money for Kee to Independent Growth, LLC (KIGI) to help support their Veteran programs. Last year’s beneficiary organization was Alliance180.

“The team at Alliance180 is honored to once again participate in this important event. Our mission at A180 is to prevent suicide and reduce the effects of trauma for Veterans, first responders, and front-line healthcare workers. We thank the ARCC Veterans Business Network for bringing attention to this issue through this annual walk,” said Bob Nevins, Founder.

As the event grew, the addition of resource booths really began adding value. This year, multiple agencies will be on site to share resource materials and information specifically for Veterans.

Some of these agencies include: ASCEND Mental Wellness, Southern Adirondack Independent Living (SAIL), NY State Department of Veterans Services, Alliance180, the SUNY Adirondack Joseph P. Dwyer Peer-to-Peer Program, and many more.

“Communities are at their best when those capable of helping show up. This suicide and prevention walk highlights our cause for Veterans, but it’s also for every member of this community impacted by the tragedy of suicide; from our first responders to our family, friends, and neighbors. Join us and walk side-by-side as we strive to strengthen communication and coordination on suicide awareness and prevention,” said Amie & Juan Gonzales, President & Chief Financial Officer of Hunt Companies, Inc., and members of the ARCC Veterans Business Network.

This event is open to the public and generally draws about 150 people, including elected officials and community leaders. Please consider coming out to show your support on Thursday, September 12th, starting at 3:30 p.m. in Glens Falls City Park. Donations are appreciated and will go to benefit the Veterans programs provided by Kee to Independent Growth, LLC (KIGI).

It was in 1991 when the Adirondack Regional Chamber of Commerce (ARCC) first introduced its annual business awards.

That first year saw one business being honored as the “Small Business of the Year”, and the business was Leland Paper Company, Inc. The following year saw the awards grow to two categories, adding on a “Rookie Business” category.

Then in 2005, the “Steven M. Sutton Small Business Award” was created to honor Mr. Sutton, who co-founded Sutton’s Marketplace, which stood at 1066 US Route 9 in Queensbury and has since been home to many businesses. To those who knew him, he was a man of vision, an entrepreneur, and everything that embodied a small business owner and valued community member.

To this day, the ARCC still holds onto his legacy, keeping the “Steven M. Sutton Small Business Award” as a part of this annual event.

Throughout the years and decades, the event grew to add on more categories, and celebrate the amazing businesses that make up the Adirondack region of upstate New York. Aside from taking a break from the event in 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the awards ceremony has been growing year after year. Which brings us to present day, and the ARCC receiving a record 45 nominations in 7 categories.

For a three-week period in the month of May, the ARCC asked for nominations and the community delivered.

“The ARCC Business Awards is one of my favorite events of the year. Watching businesses come together and celebrate each other’s success is something truly incredible,” said ARCC President & CEO Tricia Rogers.

“This year we have a record number of nominees with 45 businesses, within 7 categories, which is a great testament to how special our business community is.”

The ARCC is thrilled to announce the nominees, in their respective categories:

ARCC Provides Educational Opportunities for Business Community with Panel Discussions

The mission of the Adirondack Regional Chamber of Commerce is to support our business community through advocacy, education, connection, and collaboration advocacy, education, connection, and collaboration… And the Chamber seriously caught the “education” bug when three of its four councils held educational panel discussions in the span of about two weeks.

The good news is The good news is each event tailored to a different audience and fulfilled the mission of the ARCC providing educational opportunities for the business community. On April 30th, the Adirondack Nonprofit Business Council (ANBC) of the ARCC hosted a panel discussion on planned giving and legacy donations. After receiving feedback from nonprofits that many of them did not currently have a planned giving program, it was realized that this topic would be valuable. The ANBC assembled a panel of local experts from the nonprofit side, legal and wealth management perspectives.

Cindy Sherwood, Vice President of Development at Glens Falls Hospital, and Robin DeMattos, Director of Development & Donor Experiences at Double H Ranch, shared their experiences working with donors on planned giving. Both shared stories and scenarios and came to the same conclusion – that it’s about establishing good relationships with your donors.

To round out the discussion, the panel also featured Jessica R. Botelho, Esq., Founder of Botelho Law PLLC, and Marilyn R. Kraus, CTFA, Vice President and Trust and Wealth Services Manager, Glens Falls National Bank and Trust Company to provide their expertise. All in all it was a well-rounded discussion to almost 50 attendees at The Queensbury Hotel.

Jumping into the month of May, the ARCC Workplace Health & Wellness Council hosted an event on Workplace Wellness: From Head to Toe, featuring a panel of local experts to discuss mental health and wellbeing, physical activity, and nutrition in the workplace. A lot of the discussion featured available resources in our communities, as well as healthy reminders on how to take care of our minds and bodies. Susan McManus, Executive Director of the Adirondack EAP, Cathy Reichen Director of Health & Safety at Glens Falls Hospital, and Lindsey Brainerd Community Health Outreach Coordinator at Comfort Food Community shared their expertise on working with employers and employees on overall health. The conversation was facilitated by Erin Krivitski, PsyD and Workplace Health Strategist with CDPHP. One of the key takeaways focused on being kind to yourself, and realizing that even the smallest changes can make a big difference in your mental and physical health. The ARCC Workplace Health & Wellness Council remains dedicated to advancing its commitment to developing and sustaining a culture of wellness in the business community.

To round out the panel discussions, the Women’s Business Council of the ARCC hosted their annual SUCCESSion Summit in the Carriage House of the Fort William Henry Hotel. This year’s panel featured: Michelle Matan, CFP – Matan Wealth Partners-Rockefeller Capital Management, Sherry Finkel Murphy CFP®, RICP®, ChFC® – Madrina Molly, LLC, Wendy Waldron – Certified EOS Implementer, Brian Stidd CPA, CVA -Stidd CPA, PLLC, Vittoria Buzzelli Associate at Harter Secrest & Emery LLP, and ARCC President & CEO Tricia Rogers as facilitator.

The conversation was a continuation from previous SUCCESSion Summits, revolving around continuity planning for businesses. In a region rich with family-owned, and small-medium sized businesses, it’s important to create a culture of regular succession planning and development to ensure our community’s businesses continue to grow and thrive. Each year, this event strives to provide education and resources for our business owner community that will help them lead and succeed into the future. This year’s panelists highlighted the importance of identifying the right people for business owners to surround themselves with to successfully lead for years to come. It was a robust conversation with takeaways, and the hope is that the conversation will continue.

If there’s one thing the ARCC has learned through hosting these events, it is that our region has an amazing pool of expertise and talent, and we are so grateful for it.

ARCC Celebrates Robert Nemer as 35th Annual Juckett Award Honoree

On Friday, March 8th, 2024, The Adirondack Regional Chamber of Commerce (ARCC) presented the annual J. Walter Juckett Community Service Award to Robert Nemer.

Originally created in 1988, the award honors someone who “demonstrates a fierce commitment and hands on dedication to the betterment of our community,” explained Amanda Blanton, ARCC Vice President, Marketing and Communications. J. Walter Juckett himself was an inspiring individual who participated in a variety of civic, charitable, religious, political, business, and educational activities, and received many honors for his work.

This year, the event was hosted at the Sagamore Resort, where guests enjoyed dinner, live music, and of course recognized Nemer’s accomplishments and service to the community.

Nemer moved to Upstate New York from Philadelphia – where he was an elementary school teacher – in 1970, to help his father run his Volkswagen dealership in Albany. He partnered with his brother Peter to establish the Nemer Motor Group in 1971, which currently includes four dealerships.

Through his business, he has made several contributions to Glens Falls Hospital, Saratoga Hospital, St. Peter’s Hospital, and the Hudson Headquarters Health Network. He and his wife, Francine, have also donated their own money and time to these health centers.

Nemer is also a founding member of the Adirondack Civic Center Coalition, Inc. that was responsible for the acquisition of the Cool Insuring Arena, then known as the Glens Falls Civic Center: “He played a pivotal role in not only saving the arena, but also saving the hockey team multiple times,” said Blanton.

Additionally, partnering with The Post Star and the Tri-County United Way, Nemer started the Kids with Packs Program. Every year, he collects hundreds of backpacks that get filled with school supplies. The backpacks are then donated to children in need throughout 14 schools in Warren, Washington, Saratoga, and other counties.

Nemer also serves as a board member for the Hudson Headwaters Health Network, and the SUNY Adirondack Foundation. He is an active member of the Lake George Association, serving on the Council of Business Advisors.

Furthermore, he is a founding member of LG30, which is a select group of donors that are committed to the LGA mission of protecting and safeguarding Lake George. Nemer also frequently invests in the LGA’s Science-to-Solutions programs.

All of the above achievements, and many more, made Nemer the obvious recipient for the 35th J. Walter Juckett award. The ceremony began with an introduction from ARCC Board Chair Marc Yrsha, Senior Executive Vice President, Chief Banking Officer of Glens Falls National Bank and Trust Company. ARCC President and CEO Tricia Rogers then said a few words about Nemer and introduced the following: U.S. Senator Dan Stec, N.Y.S. Assemblywoman Carrie Woerner, N.Y.S. Assemblyman Matthew Simpson, and constituent liaison for Congresswoman Elise Stefanik, Josh Williams. Each person talked about Nemer’s accomplishments and presented their proclamations to him.

The ceremony concluded with Nemer’s friend James Towne, who gave a speech reminiscing on his friendship with Nemer and personally presented the award to him. Following the ceremony was a night of celebration for all Nemer has accomplished: “Our community really came together to support a wonderful man. The energy in the room was like no other. A huge thank you to the Sagamore Resort, our sponsors, Mr. Nemer, and our community for a truly special night,” said Rogers.
