Historical Marker to be Unveiled Recalling Carleton’s Raid Of 1780, and The Burning of Fort George

The Lake George Battlefield Park Alliance and the Washington County Historical Society
are unveiling a new historical marker at the Battlefield Park on Sunday, October 8th, beginning at
1:00 PM. This marker will be commemorating the final destruction of Fort George in 1780 by British forces under Major Christopher Carleton. The public is invited to attend the ceremony where the marker will be placed – across from the Battlefield Park Visitor Center, 75 Fort George Road, Lake George. The marker was funded by the William G. Pomeroy Foundation.

From October 8th through 11th in 1780, Carleton led 1,000 British soldiers, Native allies, and Loyalists on
a raid that included parts of modern-day Essex, Saratoga, Warren, and Washington Counties.
The Carleton Raid, also known as the “Great Burning”, met its strategic objective – the
destruction of Fort Anne and Fort George, ending the Continental Army’s presence in the North
Country.

Washington County Historical Society Vice President and Lake George Battlefield Park
Alliance Trustee Pat Niles, who has spearheaded efforts to install markers about the raids
throughout the Tri-County area, noted the utter havoc and material losses they caused: “These
raids destroyed a large percentage of pre-Revolution structures from Fort Ann and Queensbury
to Schuylerville, on both sides of the Hudson River.” Niles said. “They also provoked terror…
Some local townships actually joined Vermont after the raids, having lost faith in New York’s
ability to protect them from the British.”

The William G. Pomeroy Foundation states on its website (www.wgpfoundation.org)
that markers such as the one being unveiled for Carleton’s raid “play an important role in local
historic preservation by serving a dual purpose: they educate the public, and foster historic
tourism, which in turn can provide much needed economic benefits to the towns and villages
where the markers are placed.”

Bruce Venter, Alliance Trustee and president of America’s History LLC, said: “Major Carleton’s raid is a much-overlooked component of the British strategy in 1780… British leaders looked to support their Iroquois allies who had suffered the devastating effects of the Sullivan-Clinton campaign the previous year. Combined with raids in the Schoharie and Mohawk Valleys, the British intent was to avenge the American incursion of 1779… Incidentally, an invaluable compass – excavated during an archaeological dig at Fort George and having the markings signifying Carleton’s own 29th Regiment of Foot – may have been lost during the raid, and is now on display in the Battlefield Park Visitor Center.”

In addition to an overview of Carleton’s raids by Pat Niles, the October 8th ceremony will
include presentations by State Senator Dan Stec and Lake George Town Historian Margy
Mannix. Assisting with the marker unveiling will be John DiNuzzo, Lake George Battlefield Park
Alliance President, and Nat Huntington, Washington County Historical Society President. Fort
William Henry reenactors will serve as a color guard, and fire a salute to the soldiers who
perished in the raid at Fort George.

Following the ceremony, Pat Niles will lead a tour in Lake George Battlefield Park of
locations associated with the destruction of Fort George, the ruins of which can still be viewed
by visitors. The tour will present the context of the battle that preceded the attack on the fort,
the circumstances that led to its capture, and its occupation and final burning. The Park Visitor
Center will be open Friday through Monday this weekend, from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

The Ahimsa Festival invites you to relax and release all those energies that no longer serve you. Let stress melt away in a nourishing environment of like-minded individuals within the earth-centered elegance of Lakota’s ’s Farm, a rolling 34-acre expanse of grass, ponds, and grazing horses.

Get a spiritual high from a schedule that includes approximately 20 different wellness sessions daily. These 90-minute workshops include yoga, meditations, and sound bath healings that settle your mind and focus your awareness.

“Our goal is to bring people together in a safe place to connect on an amazing property. This festival is special because it has all these amazing offerings all in one spot,” said event organizer Kristen Zorda, owner of Yoga Mandali in Saratoga Springs.

Steady the Mind, Restore the Soul

The Ahimsa Festival, which was founded in 2012, attracted more than 200 attendees from around the country last year. The ancient idea of Ahimsa, which means “non-violence” in Sanskrit, is an approach that encourages distinctions to fall away in this soothing space, creating a broader sense of compassion for all living beings, and inspiring a deeper sense of personal growth.

Kimberly Revet, owner of the Wedding Barn at Lakota’s Farm is passionately living her dream on the property, imbuing it with an energetic satisfaction that is palpable.

In this nourishing environment, visitors further their spiritual development and experience the restorative teachings of a variety of skilled instructors including: the revered Patrick Franco, founder of the award-winning, internationally-acclaimed YogaRenew teacher training program; the dynamic Raghunath Cappo, co-founder of Supersoul Yoga and Farm; the Kripalu School of Yoga’s vibrant Coby Kozlowski; and former local Cindy Lundsford, the previous owner of several studios in the area including Hot Yoga Saratoga.

Take part in the wealth of engaging activities, meditation sessions, Bhakti, Vinyasa, aerial, and chair-supported yoga in the 150-year-old post-and-beam Bhakti Barn and the welcoming Ganesha Tent, rain or shine.

Release Further by Extending Your Stay

Adding to your transcendent experience, all weekend long attendees will have the opportunity to shop the Ahimsa Festival’s Vendor Village – a gathering of 20-30 food, beverage, craft, and wellness vendors selling clothing, jewelry, art, health products, meditation aids, and more.

Hear the healing spiritual music of the New Orleans-based Sean Johnson and the Wild Lotus Band, and listen to the therapeutic sounds of the SOMA Kirtan Band. On Saturday night, DJ and digeridoo musician Ifa Halima Bumi leads an electrifying dance party as blazing bonfires illuminate the grounds.

Stay the night while reconnecting with the Earth in Lakota’s Farm’s limited rustic onsite camping. Just minutes away, find event partner, The Preserve Battenkill River Glamping, an idyllic riverfront retreat offering deluxe tent cabins, glamping cabins, and a geodesic stargazing dome. There is a riverside wood-fired sauna, pizza oven, fire pits, kayak/canoe boat launch, free Wi-Fi, an Outpost Resort Store for essentials, and the Provisions Food Truck offering a farm-to-table menu of breakfast, lunch, and dinner choices. Balloon Fest Takes Flight This Week!

Can you Imagine lifting off the ground in the gondola basket of a hot air balloon? This is the exact spectacle that over 150,000 visitors will come to our area will see this week. Locals and visitors alike can witness the beauty of hot air balloons against the blue of the Adirondack sky…

The 50th Adirondack Balloon Festival is only days awa,y and you can feel the excitement building! This event is expected to host more than 70 balloons, drawing pilots from throughout the world, including Saga, Japan, and Gatineau, Québec. This year’s fest will begin on Wednesday, September 20th, and go through Sunday, September 24th. The launches will be at Floyd Bennett Memorial Airport, Hiland Country Club, and Crandall Park.

Fifty years ago the question was posed: “What kind of event would bring visitors to the region after Labor day?” This question was answered by John Marsden – a balloonist from Manchester, Vermont – and Walter Grishkot, who dabbled in all things Glens Falls… And the rest is history!

In 1973, this event was originally held at Adirondack Community College (SUNY Adirondack), and has grown from there. It began with 19 balloons launched during a two-day event. This event has created local lore and captured the imagination. During the 1973 launch, one balloonist landed in Argyle, a dry town, and presented the property owner with a bottle of champagne, which is the traditional gift of appreciation for being allowed to land. Kindness prevailed (a favorite saying of Gishkot), and the Argyle police allowed the balloonist to dispense the champagne.

The Adirondack Balloon Fest which is organized by volunteers has an indelible economic impact on the area. The Adirondack Festival Board has booked 400 to 500 rooms in 12 different hotels to accommodate special guests. Mark Donahue, the Balloon Festival Board President, estimates that this event brings the area five to ten-million dollars annually, as those who arrive for the event take advantage of local hotels and businesses.

The Festival runs on roughly a $200,000 budget. About $50,000 of the festival’s funding comes from Warren County Occupancy Tax Revenue. Businesses and individuals can sponsor balloons, and online donations can be made at www.adirondackballoonfest.org.

A major goal of the festival is to remain non-commercial and free. The festival benefits local non-profit groups, including Rotary, World Awareness Children’s Museum, and The Open Door Mission. It has raised nearly one-million dollars for these organizations over the last 49 years.

SHRED EVENT AT AVIATION MALL

Aviation Mall is partnering with the Adirondack Regional Chamber of Commerce and ConfiData to offer the community and its residents an opportunity to drop off documents to be shredded for free! This event will take place on Saturday, September 16th, from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM in the front east parking lot of Aviation Mall.

Participants can bring up to five boxes to shred (box size cannot exceed 24” x 12” x 10 ¼”), and items will be shredded on the spot in the mobile shred trucks. ConfiData can shred and recycle just about anything – junk mail, tax returns, checks, files, manila folders, or any documents containing personal information.

Please consider bringing a non-perishable food donation with your shred drop-off.  All food item donations will benefit the Open Door Mission, which exists to serve people at their point of need, cultivating personal growth and community sustainability – individuals who are homeless and low income.

The event is open to the public, and will occur rain or shine.

SPoT Coffee’s Fall Fest is HERE!

There is always a reason to stop by SPoT Coffee in downtown Glens Falls! They have a wide variety of food, wonderful iced and hot beverages, and a comfortable and casual vibe… And now, there’s one more reason to stop by: The Fall Fest menu has been rolled out, and these menu items have been an instant hit!

The Falls Features include beverages that can be served hot or iced: White Chocolate Pumpkin Mocha, SPoT Chaider (Chai and Cider), and Autumn Green Tea with Maple and Ginger. The Fall Feature Sandwiches include, Top Round Roast Beef, Oktoberfest Ham, and the Bacon on Bacon Grilled Cheese!

SPoT Coffee understands that with the changing of seasons, pumpkin spice is everywhere! Bill Dingman, the Glens Falls District Operations Manager of SPoT Coffee, joked: “Here in the Northeast, it’s pumpkin seaso,n and that lasts eight months out of the year.”

This year, SPoT Coffee has gone above and beyond to create a seasonal menu that has more of an Oktoberfest vibe. These menu items will be available well after the pumpkin spice has been put back on the shelf!

The evolution of Fall Fest into a multi-month, multi-item promotion is something that Bill is proud of: “We had promotions with three beverages over the summer and one food item… Now we are doing three and three, three beverages and three sandwiches,” he said.

The sandwich board that is in front of the service counter draws the eye and entices the taste buds… The artwork is created by the assistant manager and has added to the success of the promotion: “It’s been really popular. I am super happy to see how the sandwiches have taken off,” Bill said.

He also noted the importance of the cafe staff when speaking of the new menu items: “Some of the things that help to make a promotion a success is the beautiful signage and friendly people at the point of sale who can talk to the guests and suggestively sell our features… Our crew has been crushing it, and I couldn’t be more proud!”

At SPoT Coffee, Fall Fest is more than seasonal promotion – it’s an indication that SPoT Coffee is not only thriving, but growing: “We are just grateful, this cafe has really grown, we are really happy to be part of this community… We want to be the place where Glens Falls starts their day and ends their day. We are really proud of our staff… My assistant manager has been with me for two years, and several of the other staff members have been with me just as long… We are employing more people because demand is there,” he said.

SPoT Coffee is open 7-7-7: from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM, seven Days a week! So, stop in today and try one of the new additions, or a beloved favorite from the menu.
