UNITE’s Arrive Alive Tour® Visits Glens Falls High School

Today, Glens Falls High School – located at 10 Quade Street in Glens Falls – will be hosting UNITE’s Arrive Alive Tour® from 8:45 AM to 2:45 PM. This is the nation’s number-one ranked “drunk and distracted”
driving awareness event, as well as the first-and-only Marijuana Driving Simulator in the
country.

The Arrive Alive Tour uses a high-tech, state-of-the-art simulator that allows
participants to drive while distracted, drunk, or drugged in a fully functioning vehicle without
moving or being intoxicated. The simulator allows participants to experience the real-life
dangers without the real-life consequences.

April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month. In 2018, about 400,000 people were injured and
2,841 people were killed as a result of distraction-affected crashes… The fatal crash rate for teens is three
times greater than for drivers age 20 and over, and driver distraction is responsible for more
than 58% of teen crashes.

The Arrive Alive team’s mission is to educate teen drivers on the dangers and consequences of impaired and distracted driving, and to create life-long safe driving habits to eliminate fatalities on our roads. UNITE’s Arrive Alive Tour is sponsored by BOCES of New York to bring this life-changing event to the students with the mission of changing these dangerous driving behaviors and saving lives.

If you have any questions or would like more information, please call Nick Pitts at (888) 436-3394, extension 6386.

Glens Falls Earth Day Celebration

On Saturday, April 22nd, 2023, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM in City Park… Sustainable PR, Crandall Public Library, and The City of Glens Falls are sponsoring the Third-Annual Earth Day Celebration!

Sustainable PR is a green-focused public relation agency here in Glens Falls. They help to sponsor this event to reinforce the concept of sustainability in the community, and over the last three years this event has grown substantially… This year, it includes events for all ages – the event organizers have broadened the activities to get more members of the community interested in participating.

Lydia Miner joined the team at Sustainable PR as an account executive. Her previous experience working with the United Way helped her to develop relationships with local non-profits, corporate sponsors, and school districts. She has worked to attract organizations to participate, that in the past have sponsored their own Earth Day events.

“I like to get people involved and work with the school districts… Instead of everyone doing their own events, we’re trying to pull everyone together and have one event for the city. All of the organizations and businesses can get involved,” Lydia said.

The City of Glens Falls has helped to plan the event, and will be showcasing the green initiatives throughout the city. Jeff Flagg – the Director of Economic Development for the City of Glens Falls – will be on hand to give tours of the indoor vertical farm; vertical farming is the agricultural process where crops grow on top of each other, rather than next to each other. This so-called “Farming Upwards” reduces the space needed to grow crops – including herbs, lettuce, and fruit for nearby restaurants and markets.

Crandall Library is featuring an electronic recycling event, the grand opening of a new seed library, and will have master gardeners on hand with gardening tips and seed swaps!

As this year’s Earth Day event expands, Lydia keeps an open mind regarding the types of events that will be highlighted in future Earth Day events. She would like to hear feedback from the community regarding what they liked about the event: “This year we have expanded participation and are providing a good mix of events. It will be fun to hear what people liked about the event and start thinking about what we can expand on for next year,” Lydia said.

Among the many participants, BOCES SAEC will be on hand for Earth Day, and was integral in helping to market the event – each student in the BOCES graphic design class created a logo for the Earth Day flyer, and the logo that was chosen for the event was created by Kyra Connelly, through the BOCES SAEC Graphics and Visual Communications program.

Paul Morcone Appointed Next Big Cross Principal

For the 2023–2024 school year, Big Cross Street Elementary School will have a new principal – the Glens Falls Board of Education appointed Paul Morcone, who will take over from current Big Cross Principal Debbie Hall, who is retiring after 29 years as a Principal, Chief Information Officer, and Teacher.

Mr. Morcone comes to Glens Falls from Mary J. Tanner Elementary School in Granville, where he has worked for the past five years as principal. Prior to that, Mr. Morcone served as the Pre-K-12 assistant principal in Stillwater, New York. He also spent 13 years teaching at the elementary level in the Shenendehowa and Hoosic Valley Central School District.

“It is an honor to become part of Glens Falls Nation. It is exciting to be able to partner with the families, faculty staff and community of Big Cross Elementary. I look forward to collaborating with various stakeholders to ensure that safety, academics, and student needs are met. My family and I are embracing this opportunity and excited for this journey,” Morcone said.

Mary J. Tanner Elementary School will be welcoming Breanne Taylor as their new Principal, who is taking over for Mr. Morcone. She joins the Granville School District from North Colonie, where she worked with a diverse community and developed a new curriculum.

Paul Morcone will take over at Big Cross following in the footsteps of Principal Debbie Hall, who was appointed to the position in August of 2008… Debbie Hall had been a student at Big Cross during her elementary years. 2008 was a big year for Debbie Hall – that year, she became the first woman inducted into the Glens Falls Athletic Club’s Hall of Fame, for excelling as both a four-sport athlete and an outstanding coach.

As one of the first initiatives to begin his tenure, Mr. Morcone will be working with Big Cross faculty members on instructional programs. During his tenure at Mary J. Tanner Elementary, he led research-based implementation of ELA and math programs, and hopes to do the same for the Big Cross community.
