Co-Ed Pick-Up Field Hockey at The Dome

ADKSC Pick-Up Field Hockey

The Adirondack Sports Complex – better known as “The Dome” – is a multi-sport facility located at 326 Sherman Ave in Queensbury. One of the programs that The Dome features is co-ed pick up field hockey; people of all ages and skill levels meet once a week and play field hockey for an hour and a half. This program has varied in participation over the years… Jeff Rocas started out when the program was at its height. “We had so many players that I was in charge of substitutions” he said.

It wasn’t until attendance numbers began to dwindle that he picked up a stick himself. Jeff found a love of field hockey when his daughter Alyssa began playing the sport. As Alyssa’s high school career came to a close, Jeff took over the Gloverville Youth Field Hockey Program.

Jeff makes the trip from Gloversville each week to play: “It’s hard to find places to play, so I make the drive. There are other players that come from the Albany area. We drive so that we can play. We have a good group here, and it’s fun and everyone is friendly.”

Currently, the pick-up field hockey league has about eight to ten players a week. “We are always posting on Facebook to try and get more players. College kids come home and play during their breaks, people who played in high school play because they miss the sport, and boyfriends play with their girlfriends. It’s just fun.”

This week (most likely due to the holidays) there are four sets of parents playing with their children: “That is always fun to see. I play with Alyssa when she’s home, but to have four sets of parents playing with their children is wild.” Co-ed pick up field hockey plays on Thursday nights, from 7:30 PM to 9:00 PM. For more information, go to adirondacksortscomplex.com, or ADKSC Pick-Up Field Hockey’s Facebook page.

Glens Falls’ Ayden Grieve: Goalkeeper of the Year

Photo Provided by GFSD

Glens Falls Goalkeeper Ayden Grieve was named Goalkeeper of the Year in Class B at the Section II boys soccer banquet. He was also named to the all-state fourth team in the small schools division. Grieve has played on the Glens Falls High School Varsity Team for 3 years; during his freshman season, he was the starting fullback and back up goalkeeper, and throughout his Sophomore season, Ayden took over as the fulltime goalkeeper. Through that season, he recorded 111 saves and allowed 32 goals. During this past season as a junior Ayden was named team captain, and was instrumental in the team’s success – by the end of the season, Ayden had allowed only 14 goals. The Glens Falls 11-5-2 record helps to reflect Ayden’s contribution… This is an impressive improvement from the previous year, when the team was 4-13-1.

Ayden has been a goalkeeper since he was 8 years old, and in addition to playing with the Glens Falls Boys Varsity Team, Ayden also plays club soccer with FC Dutchmen Premier.

Athletic Director Shane Jones said: “We are very proud of Ayden for his accomplishments. He is a very talented multi-sport athlete, as he recently just came in 2nd place in our Mat Mania Wrestling Tournament this past weekend.”

Capital District Jets Edge Out Queensbury for the Win

Albany County Ice Rink

On Friday, December 2nd, at The Albany County Rink, the Capital District Jets met the Queensbury Spartans on the ice. Action got started early when the Jets scored on a collaboration between McKinney and Davidson; Mckinney is credited with the Assist and Davidson the goal. Queensbury did not let the period end in a shutout, as Tyler Dufour scored assisted by both Michael Deutsch and Nick Ogden. However, Davidson scored again for the Jets; the opening period ended Jets 2, Spartans 1.

Michelle Bennett Memorial Tournament

This weekend at Queensbury High School, the Gold and Blue gymnasiums were filled with basketball games at the Michelle Bennett Memorial Basketball Tournament: the girls Varsity teams filled the Blue Gym, while the JV teams from each of the programs competed in the Gold Gym.

Michelle Bennett

The tournament featured 50/50 raffles throughout the weekend, sold home made baked goods, and charged a small entrance fee. Hudson Falls, Guilderland, Glens Falls, Cohoes, Queensbury, & Niskayuna each played two games in this unseeded, play-around tournament.

The Guilderland & Niskayuna Varsity girls teams came out of the weekend undefeated! On Friday, Guilderland beat Hudson Falls 55-34, and on Saturday they beat host team Queensbury 41-31. Niskayuna handed Queensbury the loss on Friday 46-28, and toppled Glens Falls on Saturday, 74-39. Glens Fall enjoyed a win for their season opener on Friday night over Cohoes at 62-44.

Hudson Falls and Cohoes were in a barnburner on Saturday: this match saw “the Tigers vs. the Tigers”. The two teams traded points throughout the second half of the game, each team racing down the court executing plays and hitting foul shots… Regulation ended in a 46-46 tie; however, Hudson Falls pulled away in overtime, and the final score was 56-50.

End of regulation play

It was a wonderful weekend to honor and remember a member of both the Queensbury and Glens Falls Communities: Michelle Bennet was a loving mother, teacher, leader and friend.

Michelle Bennett Memorial Girls Basketball Tournament

Tournament Schedule

On Friday & Saturday of this coming weekend, Queensbury High School is hosting The Michelle Bennett Memorial Tournament. Proceeds from this girls’ basketball tournament will be donated to the Michelle Bennett Memorial Scholarship Fund. The J.V. and Varsity girls programs from Hudson Falls, Glens Falls, Queensbury, Cohoes, Guilderland, & Niskayuna will all be competing.

On February 5, 2022, Michelle Bennett – a beloved mother, teacher, and coach – passed away suddenly. Michelle had been married to her husband Jeff Bennett for almost 30 years, and together they raised three children: Mackenzie, Graceann, and Cole. Cole is a Glens Falls graduating senior this year.

Michelle was a 6th grade ELA teacher in the Queensbury School District and a valued department chairperson for many years. She was an advocate for her students and a leader amongst her colleagues, and committed to coaching and mentoring women in sports. As a coach, she was intense; but balanced that intensity with tough love for her players. Coaches and players alike knew and appreciated her mantra: “A quiet gym is a losing gym.”

When Michelle passed away in 2022, Superintendent Kyle Gannon wrote, “I feel for our staff members, our students, and our athletes who were lucky enough to know her. She has touched a thousand lives over the past 22 years.”

The J.V. Tournament will be taking place in the Queensbury High School Gold Gym, and the Varsity Tournament will be in the Blue Gym. Both J.V. and Varsity Games are scheduled on Friday at 4:30 PM, 6:00 PM, & 7:30 PM. Play resumes on Saturday, December 3rd at 11:00 AM, 12:30 PM, & 2:00 PM. Cash and Check donations will be accepted at the door all weekend long; please make checks payable to Queensbury Community Scholarship Association, and on the memo line, please indicate the Michelle Bennett Memorial Scholarship.
