Luca della Robbia, Italian, 1399/1400–1482, Madonna of the Lilies, ca. 1450–1460, Tin-glazed terracotta, The Hyde Collection, Glens Falls, NY, 1971.99

In celebration of Mother’s Day, join us at The Hyde Collection on Sunday, May 12, to explore depictions  of the most frequently painted and one of the most beloved mothers in the Western world, as depicted in  art that spans over 400 years. The Hyde House includes fourteen artworks of this famous mother and  child from various countries, including Spain, France, and Germany. Two guided tours will be provided  at 11 am and 2 pm, and admission to the Museum on Mother’s Day is free.

“Throughout historic Hyde House, there are numerous representations of the Virgin Mary, in paintings  and sculpture. The Madonna and Child was one of the most prevalent motifs in Western art, both in a  religious context (such as an altarpiece in a church) and in private devotional works. On this tour, take a  closer look at some of these beautiful works of art.”

– Bryn Schockmel, Curator of the Permanent Collection, The Hyde Collection
