Local Business Team Branches Out

Performance Industrial has experienced much success in the commercial and industrial cleaning industry. The family-owned business is continuing to grow, but the leaders of the business are expanding into a new industry…

Owners Bill and Karen Miller are teaming up with operations manager Sean Willcoxon, and his wife Jaimee, to run Tinney’s Tavern. The four purchased the well-known restaurant at the end of April and ever since have worked tirelessly to refresh the building, while maintaining everything people love about Tinney’s.

Sean has a long experience working in the hospitality industry. He explained that he was born and raised in hospitality. “My parents owned restaurants, my uncle owned restaurants.” At only 12 years old, he began his career in the family business. Sean worked hard and, as he got older, continued to move up in the industry. He became the Vice President of Catering for Mazzone Hospitality, which collected around $25-million a year and was composed of about 500 staff members. After 26 years of a successful career, Sean decided to leave: “I was looking for a little bit less of the full-time, everyday all day, massive full scale food service,” he explained.

Sean was on the board for Folds of Honor, an organization that helps provide for families of fallen or disabled service members. Bill is a huge supporter of the organization, so Sean had heard of him before, but the two actually met while attending an American Cancer Society event. They became good friends and would often meet to play golf together.

When he decided to leave Mazzone Hospitality, Sean started working for Performance Industrial as the operations manager… However, it wasn’t long before Sean decided he wasn’t completely done working in hospitality. “About six months into my work with Bill, everything was going great, but I had an itch to keep doing food and beverage a little bit, at least on the side,” said Sean.

Bill then suggested that the two team up. He proposed they buy a local restaurant, hire a manager to deal with day to day tasks, and they can be there for support. This would allow Sean to continue working at Performance Industrial, while still getting to work in the hospitality industry without having to be there everyday. After considering the offer, Sean decided it was the right decision and the search for which restaurant to buy began. They wanted to find a local place, and during their search they discovered Tinney’s Tavern.

First established in the 1950s, Tinney’s is located on Lake Desolation. It is extremely popular among snowmobilers, as there are several trails surrounding the lake. Known for great food and a friendly atmosphere, Bill and Sean agreed it was the right location: “It has a great community following and so it was really a no brainer to try to go after it,” explained Sean. At the end of April, ownership officially transferred over to Sean, Jaimee, Bill and Karen.

Once they took over, Tinney’s closed so they could do some much needed renovations. Between both of their experiences at Performance Industrial, they were more than qualified for the job where kitchen exhaust systems are a huge part of the business. “When you get to understand how the kitchens actually work from the mechanical side, everything you know makes you better and stronger,” explained Sean.

In terms of ensuring both businesses continue to thrive, they hired an extremely talented and dedicated manager, Hannah Grady. “This is really going to be Hannah’s place to run,” said Sean. “We’re going to be there to support her, and our focus is going to be everyday making sure Performance Industrial continues to do great things too.”

Overall, they want to make as few changes to Tinney’s as possible: “We’re actually keeping Tinney’s as a whole very much the same,” explained Sean, “We’re just giving it a fresh coat of paint, a little bit of new lighting, (and an) additional TV.”

Loyal customers can rest easy knowing the restaurant is not going through any drastic changes, but every renovation done is going to make the place even greater than it was before. The same goes for Tinney’s food. When the restaurant reopens, people will be pleased to know their favorite meals are still going to be served: “The expectation of the food is to be great, but it’s (also) going to be classic. Wood-fired pizzas, burgers, wings, a very small Italian section, got to add it because I have an Italian background,” Sean explained.

In addition to the renovations and great food, guests can go to Tinney’s knowing they’ll leave with a smile on their face. “We’re going to lead with hospitality and do the best we can to make sure everybody’s experience is, first and foremost, our top priority,” Sean said.

He went on to explain how he wants every person to leave feeling like they “felt like they belonged there. That they felt like they weren’t just another restaurant person, but they were part of the Tinney’s family.”

Overall, the reopening will be celebrated by both those who have loved Tinney’s for years, and people just discovering the tavern for the first time. Between the menu selection, beautiful scenery, and friendly staff everyone is sure to have an excellent experience at Tinney’s Tavern.

Latkes and Hanukkah

Hanukkah means “re-dedication.” The holiday is an eight-day celebration commemorating the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem.

Fried foods such as latkes and donuts are traditionally eaten on Hanukkah in commemoration of the day’s worth of oil that miraculously burned for eight days. This custom of eating fried foods on Hanukkah is at least nine hundred years old.

Thinking of Catering? Think SPoT Coffee – and Thank the Staff!

In 2014, SPoT Coffee was a new addition to the restaurant scene on Glens Street in Glens Falls… Now, just under a decade later, they are a mainstay of Downtown Glens Falls! SPoT Coffee, through the leadership of District Operations Manager Bill Dingman, is always on the lookout to expand offerings and find ways to service more customers… With this in mind, SPoT has moved to provide more substantial and widespread catering options through ezCater.

EzCater was established in 2007, to connect businesses with restaurants through an online marketplace.  SPoT Coffee recognized the opportunity, and Bill has been able to implement the expansion with the help of his seasoned crew. Dingman is thankful to be a part of the thriving Glens Falls community: “Honestly…We think that this cafe has really grown in terms of revenue over the last couple of years, and we are really thankful and really glad to be part of the community. We want to be the epicenter, where Glens Falls starts their day, and ends their day,” he said.

Bill knows that he owes the success of the cafe to his tenured staff, as low staff turnover is not a common trait of the cafe model: “I’m proud of our staff… They’ve done a fantastic job. We’ve added the number of staff that we are holding at any particular time because of revenue growth… We are employing more people. The demand is there, and we are really thankful,” he said.

SPoT Coffee is open “777” – from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM, seven days a week. “We have to wake up and do it every day… Our staff has had to adjust, grow, and get stronger. They manage when there is a line out the door all day,” Bill said.

As SPoT Coffee grows and adds more dynamic offerings, catering is at the forefront of their endeavors… Joining on with ezCater has allowed SPoT Coffee to service more customers in more communities, and increases catering options for potential customers that are further away – the first catering order that SPoT filled through ezCater was for customers in Corinth, instantly proving the value of the expansion!

Catering allows SPoT Coffee to increase revenue with less impact on the staff, and with Bill Dingman, it all comes back to having a reliable staff: “There had been some concern that we wouldn’t be able to have a busy cafe and keep the product that we would need for catering… We have the tenured staff, and that has allowed us to have the information to make it work. We have folks who recognize where we are, what we are doing, and see the opportunities… That’s the benefit to having long term employees,” he said.

To order from SPoT Coffee on the ezCater.com website, the minimum order is $75.00. For more information, please visit ezcater.com, or Spotcoffee.com.

South Glens Falls Central School District Seeks Additional Federal Funding for Meal Programs

The South Glens Falls Central School District now can be included in the recently expanded federal Universal Free Breakfast and Lunch Program.

The U.S. The Department of Agriculture announced that It is extending the opportunity for approximately 3,000 more school districts to provide complimentary breakfast and lunch to all students. This expansion of the Community Eligibility Provision, known as CEP, will allow South Glens Falls to request inclusion among the districts eligible to apply for additional funding.

“We are absolutely thrilled to have the opportunity to introduce universal breakfast and lunch for all our students. We have long advocated for the expansion of these vital services,” Superintendent Kristine Orr said. “The significance of free school meals cannot be overstated. Beyond ensuring that students have access to balanced and nutritious meals every school day, providing free meals to all students eradicates the stigma often associated with receiving assistance, has been shown to bolster school attendance, and enhances our students’ ability to concentrate and excel academically.”

Food Services Manager Robert J. DeFrancisco was also pleased with the announcement: “I am elated that our district may soon be able to offer universal access to breakfast and lunch. The availability of nutritious meals at school can play a pivotal role in fostering healthy eating habits from a young age. Proper nutrition during childhood leaves a lasting imprint on health and cognitive development,” DeFrancisco said.

South Glens Falls was able to apply for inclusion in this federal program as of October 1st, 2023, and if the application is approved, the district will share additional information regarding the program.

SPoT Coffee’s Fall Fest is HERE!

There is always a reason to stop by SPoT Coffee in downtown Glens Falls! They have a wide variety of food, wonderful iced and hot beverages, and a comfortable and casual vibe… And now, there’s one more reason to stop by: The Fall Fest menu has been rolled out, and these menu items have been an instant hit!

The Falls Features include beverages that can be served hot or iced: White Chocolate Pumpkin Mocha, SPoT Chaider (Chai and Cider), and Autumn Green Tea with Maple and Ginger. The Fall Feature Sandwiches include, Top Round Roast Beef, Oktoberfest Ham, and the Bacon on Bacon Grilled Cheese!

SPoT Coffee understands that with the changing of seasons, pumpkin spice is everywhere! Bill Dingman, the Glens Falls District Operations Manager of SPoT Coffee, joked: “Here in the Northeast, it’s pumpkin seaso,n and that lasts eight months out of the year.”

This year, SPoT Coffee has gone above and beyond to create a seasonal menu that has more of an Oktoberfest vibe. These menu items will be available well after the pumpkin spice has been put back on the shelf!

The evolution of Fall Fest into a multi-month, multi-item promotion is something that Bill is proud of: “We had promotions with three beverages over the summer and one food item… Now we are doing three and three, three beverages and three sandwiches,” he said.

The sandwich board that is in front of the service counter draws the eye and entices the taste buds… The artwork is created by the assistant manager and has added to the success of the promotion: “It’s been really popular. I am super happy to see how the sandwiches have taken off,” Bill said.

He also noted the importance of the cafe staff when speaking of the new menu items: “Some of the things that help to make a promotion a success is the beautiful signage and friendly people at the point of sale who can talk to the guests and suggestively sell our features… Our crew has been crushing it, and I couldn’t be more proud!”

At SPoT Coffee, Fall Fest is more than seasonal promotion – it’s an indication that SPoT Coffee is not only thriving, but growing: “We are just grateful, this cafe has really grown, we are really happy to be part of this community… We want to be the place where Glens Falls starts their day and ends their day. We are really proud of our staff… My assistant manager has been with me for two years, and several of the other staff members have been with me just as long… We are employing more people because demand is there,” he said.

SPoT Coffee is open 7-7-7: from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM, seven Days a week! So, stop in today and try one of the new additions, or a beloved favorite from the menu.

Hudson Falls Agricultural Program Receives Charter

Hudson Falls High School Agricultural Program is flourishing under the leadership and guidance of Maggie Hogan. Maggie – a Hudson Falls Alumni – was first offered a job by the High School Principal Jim Bennefield on the day that she graduated from Hudson Falls High School! Principal Bennefield noticed Maggie’s efforts throughout her high school career in agriculture science classes, and saw the need to expand the agricultural curriculum at Hudson Falls High School.

Maggie is from a large family of dairy farmers in Hudson Falls, and knows that the future of agriculture is in the hands of the students. Maggie obtained her degree from SUNY Cobleskill, returned to her hometown, and began teaching.

“This is an Ag (Agricultural) community, I want Ag in my hometown and for students to learn in four years what I wasn’t offered when I was a student here,”  Maggie said.

Superintendent Dan Ward was happy with the implementation of the program: “The agriculture program has been on the cusp of implementation for a few years, unfortunately it was delayed by the pandemic. The fact that we have made this program a reality for our students is yet another post-pandemic triumph for the Hudson Falls School District,” he said.

Maggie Hogan with the FFA Charter

This past June, Maggie attended the New York Association of Agricultural Educators conference, where Hudson Falls CSD was officially awarded with the Future Farmers of America (FFA) chapter and charter.  FFA is a student-run organization that uses agricultural education to transform lives and prepare members for leadership, personal development, and career success.  Future Farmers of America chapters can be chartered in any public school with an agricultural education program – Leadership is provided by student officers who are elected each year by the chapter’s members, and by the agriculture teacher who serves as the advisor for the chapter.

Maggie is proud of her role in the community and the school: “I literally love my job. It is so fun and so rewarding,” she said. This past Sunday, Maggie and her students were at the Washington County Fair to support the local FFA and to broaden awareness of the emerging agricultural program at Hudson Falls High School.

Washington County Fair: August 21st through 27th

The Washington County Fair will be held from August 21st to 27th, at 392 Old Schuylerville Road in Greenwich, NY. Adult admission is $15.00. Children under the age of 13 do not require an entry ticket. Separate tickets are required for the rides. Advanced ride tickets are on sale until August 18th – a sheet of 20 ride tickets is $12.00, and each ride uses 3 to 5 tickets. Parking for the fair is free.

The Washington County Fair is an event that locals look forward to all year round! For nearly a century the fair has provided a week of rides, food, and agricultural exhibitions. Fairgoers have the opportunity to see aspects of everyday life on a farm, and get a glimpse of what life is like on a working farm.

This year, the fair is featuring “The Big Push” which is a live dairy birthing demonstration celebrating the beauty of new life. This is an experience that dairy farmers celebrate throughout the year.

The Washington County fair gives fairgoers an opportunity to taste local food, dairy products, and produce. Each year, there is a wide variety of food to experience… This year, there will be Mexican Street Corn Pizza, Hearts Catering will feature a Southwest Egg roll, and Polar Bear will have a Pumpkin and Peach ice cream! Traditional fairground favorites like fried dough will also be available, and to quench your thirst throughout the day, you can stop by the Craft Beverages Corral, where there will be samples of local beer, wine, cider, and spirits.

While enjoying the food and beverages, entertainment will be all around you… New performers this year include Catalyst Quartet, Kevin Warren and the Bedrock Foundation, Craic Agus Ceol. Jay Mattioli’s Electrifying Magic, Micheal Goudeau the Comedic Juggler, and Pirate Dan. For the kids, story time will be provided by the Argyle Free Library. There will be the always popular 3.0 diesel class truck pull and demolition derby contests… And, of course, so many wonderful animals to see!
